Designing Group Missions for Real Engagement

Strategic product restructuring to accelerate launch and increase engagement for Acquaint's new social feature.

"Your feedback has helped us focus on key things and accelerated development by 2-4x at least!"

Alex, Acquaint co-founder & CTO

Project Snapshot

Platform: Web / Mobile-web

Timeline: 6 weeks

Role: Product & UX Strategy Lead

Scope: Redesign and optimize the early-stage Group Mission experience ahead of a partnership launch with Idealist.

Focus Areas

  • Product teardown & friction analysis
  • UX & flow restructuring
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Requirement definition & prioritization
Acquaint x Idealist Partnership

The Context

Acquaint is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit building infrastructure for human connection through three programs: Global Conversations, Acquaint Walks, and Missions.

At the start of this project:

~150 solo missions had been completed

Group Missions were brand new

A high-visibility launch was scheduled for March 3, 2026 in partnership with Idealist

The timeline was fixed. The experience was not.

The Problem

Early user testing revealed three structural issues:

Group missions did not feel interactive, despite a built-in chat feature.

Roles and mission stages were unclear. Groups were behaving like solo participants.

The Group Lead experience was heavy and fragmented.

The lead had to manage:

Accept mission → Create group → Invite participants → Run mission → Submit impact → Complete reflections → Celebrate → Generate report

The cognitive load was too high.

The flow lacked cohesion.

The interaction felt mechanical instead of a natural connection.

Strategic Hypothesis

If we reposition the group chat as the center of the experience, not a side feature, we can:

Increase real interaction between participants

Create natural transitions between mission phases

Reduce operational burden on the Group Lead

In short:

Design for connection, not task completion.

Success would be measured by:

Higher mission completion
Increased chat penetration
Increased visit frequency
Repeat mission sign-ups

Prioritization & Requirements

Before proposing features, I defined user needs based on their stage in the mission lifecycle.

We aligned these needs directly with Acquaint’s vision before moving into solution mode.

From there:

I translated needs into structured user stories

Evaluated solutions using the RICE framework

Prioritized for launch velocity and impact

This ensured decisions were:

  • Measured
  • Defensible
  • Focused

Not reactive.

Key Trade-offs

Several features had high potential but high complexity:

Dynamic mission recommendations

Prefilled chat prompts

Gamification mechanics

Rather than overbuild, I recommended a staged approach:

Start simple.Measure impact.Then invest.

Examples:

  • Hardcoded mission recommendations first
  • Static prefilled chat prompts before dynamic generation

The goal was acceleration with learning — not perfection.

Design & Iteration

We implemented structural changes that:

Clarified participant roles

Reduced friction in mission progression

Embedded chat into mission milestones

Simplified the Group Lead workflow

Because Idealist would drive significant new traffic, first-time experience was elevated through the same changes.

You only get one chance to make a first impression. The goal was to make it right from the start.

Release Strategy

Given the fixed Idealist webinar timeline, we deployed an initial batch of improvements prior to the large promotional push.

This allowed:

Early signal collection

Risk mitigation

Real usage data before scale

Measurement Framework

Because Group Missions are new, this release establishes the baseline.

Success metrics include:

Feature Adoption

% of new users who sign up for a mission

In-Feature Engagement

  • Chat interaction
  • Mission validation
  • Celebration flow completion

Mission Completion

  • Completion ratio
  • Quality of impact reports

From here, optimization becomes systematic. Not speculative.

Client Feedback

I just wanted to say thank you for all your help on group missions so far. It has helped in many ways you might not even see. Your feedback has helped us focus on key things and accelerated development by 2-4x at least! Getting an outside opinion has proved crucial for making some fast decisions and getting things done. Your insights and industry perspective is a great balance for our impact mindset which sometimes makes us miss important things for sustainability. The way you jumped right in to giving detailed feedback on solo missions was amazing - it’s already improved the process and UI a lot and we still have several pages to go through. You are awesome!
